hustle porn

What is hustle porn?

This isn’t anything X rated or not safe for work, it’s actually a good term to understand when talking about a work/life balance. So what is it. Well the urban dictionary says hustle porn is the fetishization of extremely long working hours. It’s a common term used in the entrepreneurial world that can be seen a lot all over social media especially Instagram. Telling us that unless we are suffering, grinding, working every hour of every day, we’re not working hard enough. It’s an obsession with pushing ourselves harder, listening to people tell us to work harder, and broadcasting how hard we’re working. Not only is it ineffective, but working too hard is actually linked to poor health and wellbeing.

Fake news

We often see people on Instagram in their supreme hoody in their private jets, just telling us to “hustle” and that’s how they made it, I’m sure many of them did but, a lot of them forget to say how important it is to look after your mind, body and spirit. There’s a kind of hustle culture where if you’re not hustling you are not good enough. Often people like @garyvee get blamed for people adopting this mentality of just working, but is he to blame? Gary Veynerchuk was born in Russia and emigrated to the United States of America, so he would have had to work hard to live the American dream! You’ve also got to understand that Gary loves what he does! He’s not working at a nine to five that he doesn’t want to get out of the bed in the morning for, he’s following his passion and having a purpose. He’s recently been in a video with Sara Dietschy explaining his thoughts on the topic of hustle porn where he says “do I believe that work ethic is a foundational piece of success? Yes I do. Do I want anybody to ever work so much that they get depressed? Of course not!” which I think helps us put what Gary Vee’s message is, into perspective, sometimes I think we need a bit of a push when we’re being a bit lazy, even myself, but I don’t think people like Gary Vee are to blame for people overworking, he’s helped many people including myself to get and stay motivated on our journeys.

Is hustling bad for you?

Don’t get me wrong I think we need a bit of hustle in us to get us through the hard times, weather we’re broke or broken, we need to find that grit that keeps us going. So what is hustling? Well going back to the urban dictionary, It says it’s to have the courage, confidence, self belief, and self-determination to go out there and work it out until you find the opportunities you want in life. Sounds great right…? Well yes it is but, it becomes a problem when it turns into over working, early mornings and late nights aka hustle porn. The owner of reddit says that sometimes entrepreneurs get so caught up in trying to make their business a success that they can end up putting their health on the proverbial back burner, which is neither smart nor productive. So is it bad for you? Well below is some studies showing the problems that can arise from overworking.
so overall the problem isn't hustling that's just a term, the problem comes when we over work aka hustle porn.

How to avoid the trap

As entrepreneurs we have the desire to become the best and it does involve hard work but it also involves smart work. We are often told we need to work harder but that doesn’t always have to be the case, there is some things you can do to avoid falling for the trap of hustle porn.
  • Success isn’t a business: I believe success is what we find on our journey not the end goal, it’s part of the process. I understand that Success means different things to different people, but I'm quite sure nobody's idea of success is to work nonstop at the expense of friends, family, and health. So, you need to find out what success means to you and what that entails. It's highly likely that your ultimate goal is to be able to eventually not work, or at least to work only part-time while your business is run by other, competent people, so you can enjoy the more important things in life, like spending time traveling or with your family. If this is your ultimate goal, keep in mind that you don't need to work yourself ragged until you achieve it and then enjoy the fruits of your labour. That's how you miss childhoods and alienate the people around you. Rather, I think it's more important to incorporate spending time with your family into your vision for success. If you include downtime in your definition of success, that means you have to make room for it to be successful by your own definition.
  • Sleep your way to success: Well you’re going to have to work to succeed but, after decades of being told that the only way to be successful is to work harder than everyone else. Just as it's better to work smarter than harder, it's also better to manage your time smartly rather than trying to shoehorn more into your day. So you need to put in as much energy Into your sleep as your working hours Rather than thinking of your time as something that has no value that you can give away, think of it as a currency you are using. And then be a little bit cheap when spending that currency on your business. If you would like to learn more about sleep and how to push up them quality Z’s click here to read our sleep smarter blog.
  • Control your passion: If you can’t control your passion, it will control you. When your passion control’s you, you end up burning out not being able to get any work done, because you’ve used up all your energy. So don’t follow the people who tell you to sacrifice everything to succeed such as Eating and sleeping because they don’t what they’re talking about. Find what’s right for you and stick to it.
