How to master the 12 fundamentals of life

Are you on a journey to living your best life? If so, you might not know what to focus on or where to even start but, in today’s blog we will be guiding you through the process of creating the life you desire. Usually, most people focus on two fundamentals, like their career and romantic relationship which leaves them unhappy and unbalanced, for example, you might think that winning the lottery would be the best thing to ever happen to you, however previous winners often waste all of their money in the first few years and become very lonely in the process. I understand that at certain points you may need to put in a few extra hours into a topic to get the best results but, you should always aim to live a balanced life and that’s why we are going to teach you how to master the 12 fundamentals of life!
In each of these aspects of life, you are going to need to ask yourself 4 questions that will help keep you aligned in creating the life that you desire to have. These are:
  • What do you believe? To do this you are going to want to look at your existing beliefs and see whether they are accurate and valuable or whether they are limiting you in achieving your full potential. Do you think that you are to clever to study? If so, you are going to want to replace this idea with a student mindset in which there are endless opportunities to learn. When you believe in something it becomes your identity and our minds don’t like contradicting with our identity so, if you believe that you are a healthy energetic person, you are more likely to become one.
  • What do you want in this area of life? This is all to do with thinking about what your aims are, what are the results you want to see that will make you feel fulfilled. Who do you want in your circle? People who have a problem for every solution or the people that are motivating you to push your boundaries? By asking yourself this question, everything will become so clear that you can visualize the person you want to be, it will help you understand what your higher self will look like.
  • Why do you want it? Your why is so important, it gives you a purpose, it gives you a reason. Think about what you will gain from it and on the other hand, what will you lose if you don’t? Your why is so powerful as it becomes a fuel for when things get hard, it gives you that fire in your belly that nothing else does.
  • How do you get it? Probably one of the easiest questions out of the lot, how are you going to achieve the goals you set? What are the habits that you are going to build in order to get to where you want in life? Do you need to start exercising more or do you need to take more care of your diet?

Personal

this part of life is split up into 5 categories in which you can work on. You are accountable for every single one these and can do them all by yourself, they don’t depend on anyone apart from yourself.

1.) Health and fitness

We all have different types of body’s and in turn, we have different requirements to keep our self fit and healthy, which can become quite confusing, however, that is not a good enough excuse to not even try! Keeping your body in optimal condition is so important for the most simplest of tasks, you don’t want to be the grandparent that can’t lift up your grandchild without feeling sharp pains running down your back, you don’t want to be the person who doesn’t go out with friends because you can’t keep up with them, so what’s stopping you from taking care of your own health?

As I have said many times before, we all have different needs to stay at our best and I’m not a trained nutritionists or personal trainer that can confidently tell you how to reach your fitness goals, but thankfully my good friend Ali is well experienced in this field and a few weeks ago we collaborated on a blog together about 10 recipes for energy boosting smoothies!

2.) Intellectual life

Similar to the last aspect of your life, not only do you need to properly feed your body the good stuff, you also need to nourish your mind. This seems to always come up in my blogs and I think it’s because educating yourself is one of the most important habits to have. Not only should you study but, you should also create, amazing things happen in our brain when we create something of our own. You can combine both the input and the output together as well, watch a video on how to draw and then turn into a new age Vincent Van gogh by painting a masterpiece.

I understand, you don’t have enough time to read a book or watch an hour long YouTube video but there’s no need to worry, by clicking on this link you can get a free 30 day trial for audible which is an app where you can listen to your favorite books no matter whether you’re in the car or at the gym.

3.) Emotional life

What’s the point of life if you aren’t happy, even Aristotle realized this in his day saying this – “Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” As I said earlier these five aspects of your life are all controlled by you, but unfortunately some people believe that their happiness depends on other people but that’s not true, yes surrounding yourself with good people can bring joy into your life but you need to understand that happiness is an inside job! There are many ways that you can improve your emotional life such as reflecting on your thoughts through a journal, to simply smiling more.

One philosophy that has helped me to take back control of my emotions is stoicism, the main stoic principle that I find useful is that we shouldn’t let our happiness be controlled by the things we can’t control.

4.) Character

Your character is what defines you, it’s the foundational element of your behaviors and actions. When all is said and done, your character is what you will be remembered for. Having character is what makes you, you and that’s why it is so important to build a strong one. You don’t want to be like everybody else, that’s boring so you need to define who you are.

I don’t think that there is a any secret to building character because it’s based off who you are, what you want and the things that you have been through. If you are going through some hard times at the moment, just remember that there is always something to learn from it. “Anything that is annoying you is teaching you patience. Anyone who abandons you is teaching you how to stand up on your own two feet. Anything that angers you is teaching you forgiveness and compassion. Anything that has power over you is teaching you how to take your power back. Anything you hate is teaching you unconditional love. Anything you fear is teaching you courage to overcome your fear. Anything you can’t control is teaching you how to let go.” - @thisisgoya.

5.) Spirituality

Before you totally ignore this one if you’re not religious, being spiritual doesn’t have to be all about religion. It’s about having faith, it’s about having the belief that anything is possible. There are so many aspects of being spiritual, from feeling that you have some extra power to feeling that you are not alone and there is some force that is on your side, that is guiding you down the right path.

Although Buddhism is a religion, many of the concepts can be used everyday for a more fulfilling life. As you may know, I have deeply studied Buddhism for 2 years and it is something that I have fell in love with. There are so many different ways of being classed as a Buddhist and it can co-exist alongside every other religion. Most of the mean components don’t concern themselves with life after death instead, it is more focused on the here and now, it’s about being in the present, focusing us on what we can do today to live more fulfilling lives and that’s why I love it so much. Although some aspects can sound a bit woo woo at times, lots of the key principles are backed by scientific research like the benefits of meditation.

Relationships

This area, which consists of three sections is all about collaboration and growing with other people, it’s about building a community of people who you can trust and they can confide in you.

6.) Love relationship

In life you are going to want find that special someone, some people call it their soulmate for others it’s there ride or die. I know everybody says that it’s not all about looks, but it truly isn’t, you want to find someone who you feel comfortable being your truest self with. If you’re out there, slide into my DM’s! But seriously, you will know when you meet the one.

Although I’m definitely not an expert in this field, I think that simply having fun with your significant other is so important. Guilty myself but, after a while in a relationship, we always seem to loose that spark because we stop putting effort in, no dates, no spontaneity, nothing. If you’re struggling to get into a relationship the reason might be that you aren’t looking after yourself first. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty glass.

7.) Parenting

I really feel that there is a disconnect between generations, the elderly think that the youth are disrespectful and lazy and the young think that the older generation are rude and boring, the truth is that there is good and bad in every generation and we shouldn’t stereotype people based off one bad experience instead, we should learn what life is like on the other side and enjoy the time that we have with each other. Parents should invest their time into watching their Kids favorite YouTuber and Kids should learn about how to run a household.

We might of stumbled across a problem because my audience may be a little young to be having Kids but, don’t just ignore this one, not only is it good to learn for the future but, whether you want Kids or not you need to understand that you have a responsibility for future generations to come, be a role model, be the inspiration for the kid who has been told they’re worthless their whole life. Set an example because you never know who is watching.

8.) Social life

Having a group of people around you that push you towards a better version of you are a vital attribute to living a fulfilling life, so much so that research has suggested that it could even be a factor towards living a healthier happier life which we have spoken about in our blue zone blog post which looks at the common lifestyle choices of the oldest people in the world!

In such an isolated world you can easily start to feel lonely and disconnected from the world, unable to build friendships and your own little tribe of supporters. To avoid this, it’s a great idea to start meeting people with similar hobbies as you and that has become so much easier with the app meetup, who let you know about events going on around you that you are interested in, this is a great way of joining a community of like-minded people.

Business

The business fundamentals are concerned with your wealth and job satisfaction. You may believe that these are both the same thing but they’re definitely not, you can have all the money in the world and not enjoy your job and on the other hand, you could have the best job in the world but not look after your finances and get into dept.

9.) Career

On average, people spend around 14 years of their lives working at a job, as that sinks in, you’re going to realize that you need to find a job that truly satisfies you because you’re going to be doing it for a very long time. Yes, gaining experience having a part time job working for a big company is great to learn skills that you get to keep forever but, my guess is that you want more from life, you want to create something that is bigger than yourself so, let me tell you how.

You’ve just finished college or quit your day job and there is lots of pressure to climb the corporate ladder from your family and society overall, but you have no clue on where to start or even knowing what you want to do. Instead of just jumping back into something that you hate and struggle to get up in the morning for, you need to find your purpose, the thing that you are here for and I think the best way to do that is by making an ikigai.

10.) Financial life

I’m not really a materialistic person but, I do understand the importance of having money and you should to. We’re often so silly with our money, for example people by £100 bags but not £5 on a personal development book that would fill your bag full of money. I don’t like to blame school’s but, they really should teach you to manage your finances as a mandatory class at school. Don’t get me wrong, what you have in the bank isn’t everything but, research has shown that you can use your money to make you more happy!

So you want to start making bigger figures than you ever have before, well to get to that stage, you are going to need to learn where to invest your money in the first place and thankfully we’ve already wrote a blog on it called “5 things you need to invest your money in to have a great 2020.” Which you can read by clicking here.

The journey

The last two areas on which you will need to create are the missing parts of the puzzle that tie everything together.

11.) Quality of life

This is the part where you think of all things that you want in your life and don’t hold back. The car you’ve dreamt of having ever since you was a kid, the big mansion with all your friends and family gathered around the dining table to feast on the banquet that your in-house Michelin star chef has cooked for all of you.

No you don’t need the flashy cars and holiday homes but, if that’s what you have always wanted, go out and get it. It’s all about making memories to look back on.

12.) Life vision

As we’ve already discussed, it is hard to balance all these different aspects of your life at once and time to time you may slip up and fall off track but, if you have a vision of what your perfect life is to guide you, you’ll always find a way to get back on your feet and work it out.

This is the time where you need to put pen to paper and encompass all the different attributes of life Into one or two pages, kind of like a synapses of what you desire. Whether you believe in the law of attraction or not, subconsciously, by having this you will be pulled in the direction of achieving what you put, instead having to push for it, this will make decision and habits a lot easier to choose as you have a basis of who you want to be.
