20 common habits of highly successful people
Unfortunately, there’s not a magic button you can press to short cut your way to success, however, you could learn the habits of the people who are where you want to be in life and copy them. I think the best way to get where you want to be in life, is to learn from the people who are already there. At a guess, I’m assuming that you don’t know many super successful people to ask them what they did differently in their past that has helped them to become so successful, I also want to become successful but, don’t know anyone personally that has got to that stage yet, so I did some research. By watching YouTube videos, interviews and reading articles on what they have said, I have found the 20 common habits of highly successful people that you can implement in to your life, which you can read below!
1. They have a plan
To be successful you are going to have to be organized. If you think of every important event in our life like a wedding or a holiday, we always plan ahead to foresee future problems and make the most out of our time yet, when it comes to our whole life we fail to plan, which is basically planning to fail. One of the key elements to being successful is planning as it helps you structure your life to help you achieve your dreams. There are many different techniques to help you plan your day and one of my favorites is Parkinson’s law, which is a when you set out a certain amount of time to complete a task by.
2. They are always learning
To become and stay successful, you need to nourish your mind by constantly educating yourself to be better and learn new skills. Most of the successful people that we are looking at are from an older generation so, they learnt most things from books but, now with new technology ever present (which they invented), we’re able to learn on the go with audio books, which is especially useful if you learn best from hearing something. One of the best services for audio books is audible by Amazon, they allow you to listen to your favorite books anytime, anyplace all at the touch of button. 3. They have great social skills
There are many forms of social skills such as conversation tactics, building a report with someone and displaying confident body language around others. Successful people seem to have all of these skills in abundance but not because they were born like it, it was because they worked on themselves. Many successful people could be classed as introverts but, they understand the Importance of having great social skills. if you would like to improve your social skills, one technique that I like to use is the FORD technique which is a basic skill to learn that helps us with conversation starters.
4. They reduce meaningless decisions
Have you ever noticed that the super successful always seem to be wearing the same clothes every day of the week. Take Steve Jobs for example, he is well known for always wearing the same outfit, black turtleneck, blue jeans and new balance trainer’s. Successful people don’t wear the same clothes all the time for no reason though, their not lazy and they’ve got money to pay for luxurious clothes, so why don’t they? I did my research and found that the reason why they do this is because of decision fatigue, still don’t have a clue what I’m talking about? let me explain. The rich and successful live very busy life’s in which they have to make very important decision that are crucial for their business and that’s not an understatement, a simple yes could either cost them billions of pounds or make them billions of pounds. This is why it is vital for them to conserve their brain power for the bigger things in life and that’s why they don’t waste their time meaninglessly choosing which brand they are going to wear. It’s not just clothing either, anything that they can set up to be automatic in their environment that will limit their decision making, they will. Before you start going around wearing dirty smelly clothes and seeing everybody avoid you, understand that they probably have a few spares in their closet so they don’t stink!
5. They surround themselves with the right people
The next commonality between the highly successful is that they are all a part of the illuminati, no not really but, they are always networking with people who are on the same journey as them. Have you ever heard the saying you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with? Well, it’s the same for the elite. If you want to become successful try and look for win-win scenarios in which you and someone else offer each other great value. A great way to meet new people who are interested in the same things as you, is to use meetup which is a business which encourages people to get together with a common hobbies or interests.
6. They learn to deal with stress
If you want to be successful, you’re going to have to learn how to deal with stress. When being in control of millions of pounds and thousands of peoples life’s, stress comes part in parcel with it but, that doesn’t have to be a problem, as long as you learn to manage it. A great way to manage stress is to meditate but some of you may struggle to do this on your own and that’s why I think it is a great idea to download an app like headspace who are a leading brand in modern meditation, they’ve adapted the traditional Buddhist practices to fit in with our hectic schedules.
7. They live a healthy lifestyle
They say that health is wealth and they’re right! It’s also a lot of other things as well. If you imagine your body like a vessel that is helping you to get to where you want to be, you’ll understand how important it is to look after it. There are many ways that you can improve your health, from exercising more to eating a healthier diet. All successful people seem to do some form of exercise, whether it’s playing tennis with their partner or going for a nice evening stroll to the park with their children.
8. They use their money wisely
If you won the lottery today, what would you spend your money on? A sports car, a 24k gold Rolex watch or even a fancy holiday, although these things can be nice, money does run out quick. The successful didn’t win the lottery but what they learnt was to not use all their money on pointless liabilities, instead they invest their earnings on assets which make them more money. 9. They take risks
Take a risk or lose the chance! When becoming a highly successful person you are going to have to make some big decisions that could be very costly, that’s why you have to be clever when making decisions, on the other hand if you don’t take a leap of faith sometimes you never know what might be possible. Did you know that Elon Musk spent millions on his business's yet struggled to pay for rent? If you want to become successful you need to push yourself out of your comfort zone and think, what’s the worst that could happen?
10. They give back to others
Truly successful people are some of the happiest in the world and you might be thinking that it’s because they can buy fancy things and they have all the money they will ever need but, the truth is money doesn’t really buy happiness, it’s more about what you do with it as you can see in this blog. One of the ways you can use your money to make you happy is by giving it away! People like Bill Gates and Oprah are known for being philanthropists, which is where you give large amounts of your money to charity’s and greater causes. If you want to follow in these people’s footsteps you can start by sharing your money out more.
11. They ignore conformity
Do you really think that the successful care what other people think? Of course not, they don’t concern themselves with the opinions of other people or else they wouldn’t be where they are today. I’m not advising you to not listen and be pig headed around every one but, other people can be very detrimental to how your life turns out if you let them influence you in a bad way. Most successful people aren’t the popular Child at school they’re the kid who was studying in the library. Bill Gates had this to say, “be nice to nerds, chances are you’ll end up working for one.”
12. They are goal driven
Yes, big companies hit huge milestones every year but, if you look deeper into the owner of them, you’ll see that they have one main goal that they want to achieve in their lifetime. Think about Elon Musk, he’s created the brand SpaceX, he’s built rocket ships… and blown them up but, his main aim in life, is to put the human race on Mars! To be successful in a very competitive world, you need to be intensively driven in completing the tasks you set your self on. Every so often you should check in on your results to see how things are going.
13. They fail forward
On your journey to success, you are going to face many obstacles and challenges along the way. Not to be the barer of what you think is bad news but, you are going to fail! Failing isn’t a bad thing though, it shows you that you are on the right path so, if things are getting harder push through them and use your failures as fuel to strive for greatness. Remember, with great risk comes great rewards.
14. They are proactive rather than reactive
As we’ve already stated, on your journey there are going to be lots and lots of set backs that you are going to have to go through, but it’s how you come back from it that matters. If you face a problem, you can’t just let it take over your life, you need to learn from your mistakes and look for ways to resolve the issue. Successful people don’t just give up when things start to go wrong, they pick themselves up and look for ways to improve, always taking an optimistic out look on their life.
15. They value alone time
We live in such a hectic world where if you’re not living a “busy” lifestyle, you’re not doing enough. What was quite interesting to see when I was looking at the habits of highly successful people is how much they value time alone where they can invest in their self. Living in such a chaotic world doesn’t give us time to create or even think straight, this is what Nikola Tesla said about it “be alone, that is the secret of invention; be alone, that is when ideas are born”. One of the most interesting things I learnt was about Bill Gates’s think week, this consists of the owner of Microsoft secluding himself twice every year where he can not make contact with his friends and family, during this time he will read many books, work on his self development and think of new ideas. You don’t have to make drastic changes like Bill and just disappear for a week but, simply by putting your phone away for 1 hour and reading a book instead, you will see huge improvements.
16. They take time to reflect on themselves
As an entrepreneur your life is like a roller-coaster with many highs and many lows, because of this you can experience many emotions to extreme levels. A way of combating extreme emotions is checking in with yourself and reflecting on what you are experiencing. You shouldn’t let success get to your head or failure get to your heart.
17. They have multiple incomes
Research has shown that millionaires from across the world have at least 7 streams of income, yet you have one at most. Some of the greatest minds in the world work at a senior level for other companies so, they can learn new skills and tactics to bring to their own business. Although working for someone else eliminates any risk, the best way to make lots of money is to find ways that you can make passive income, this is something that you invest in maybe once or twice but you make gradual income over time from it, for example like J. K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books only once but she still makes money from them because people still buy them. If you want to start making passive income, you could start by making a YouTube video with an affiliate link in the description, every time that someone watches your video there’s a chance that they might click the link and you will make money.
18. They are good listeners
You might think that successful people are ignorant and don’t care what you have to say because they have already accomplished so much, however, they are some of the greatest listeners in the world because they have a huge desire to learn and grow and listening to what people have to say is one of the best ways of doing so because you never know what someone else has knowledge on. Constructive criticism, employee ideas and keeping their ear out for new opportunities are all welcomed by these people.
19. They start the day early
Now, I’m not advising you to ruin your sleep by getting up at 5am every day but, studies have suggested that most successful people are early rises, however, there are some successful people who don’t wake up in the early hours of the morning. The difference between you and them is that no matter what time they wake up they start their day off on the right foot (not literally), they don’t press snooze, they don’t check their social media and they most definitely don’t waste time not doing anything productive or constructive. All these people have the luxury of sleeping in on a very expensive bed yet, they choose to rise and grind. If you would like to find out what time you should wake up, go and check out my friends blog on sleep cycles.
20. They don’t retire
Last but not least, they don’t retire and do you know why? It’s because they love what they do! If you ever get to speak to someone who is really successful, they’ll tell you that they don’t see what they do as a job, it’s a passion, it’s something that they love which allows them to carry on because they don’t see it as a chore.
